I finally solved the SD card problem with my crap quality clone. At the rear of the mini SD socket, the track nearest the edge of the PCB (the one the goes to the SMD resistor at the side of the 8 pin IC next to the CAN filter) is supposed to be switched to GND when a card is inserted.

Mine didn't - crap socket I suppose. Anyway, I soldered the track to GND and powered the clone up with the card already inserted. Everything appears to work now (had it logging data from a Z16SE Opel ECU on the bench anyway). I also used the tiny beeper from the back of an old dashboard as the speaker.
